Update on Callum Wilson’s status as Newcastle United decision is made prior to West Ham United following his six-month absence Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson is on the brink of his return to the pitch following an extended period of absence. Wilson has not appeared for Newcastle since May as a result of persistent back and hamstring ailments that have persisted since the preseason.

The 32-year-old has only started two games for Newcastle since the turn of the year due to calf and pectoral injuries that he sustained during the second half of the previous season. Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s head coach, indicated that Wilson and Kieran Trippier would be available after the international break.

He also mentioned that the West Ham United match at St James’ Park on 25 November (8pm kick-off) could serve as a potential return date. Trippier has been sidelined since early October due to a hamstring injury; however, he is imminently approaching his return.

However, neither athlete travelled to Saudi Arabia for warm-weather training over the weekend.

Newcastle’s 13 first-team players travelled to Riyadh on Saturday to participate in an open training session at Al Awwal Park in front of supporters. They returned home on Monday. Trippier and Wilson were instructed to refrain from accompanying the squad on their journey.

Wilson remained on Tyneside in anticipation of his return to training later in the week in advance of the West Ham match. Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, and Emil Krafth were also unable to travel due to their ongoing recovery from long-term injuries.

Eddie Howe, the head coach, will resume his duties with a nearly complete squad later this week, as 11 first-team players are scheduled to return from international duty. This follows the departure of a bare-bones squad to Saudi Arabia.

Newcastle will receive a substantial advantage with Wilson’s return to the squad, as they have been unable to secure the services of an experienced natural striker to assist Alexander Isak thus far this season. Isak is in excellent form as he prepares for the West Ham match.

He has scored in his last four matches for the club and has also scored five goals in his last three appearances against The Hammers.
Wilson’s record against West Ham is equally remarkable, as he has scored 12 goals in 12 Premier League starts.

Only Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen have ever scored more Premier League goals against the East London outfit. Newcastle has been especially circumspect regarding the striker’s return to playing with Howe, citing James Bunce’s positive influence on player recovery and fitness levels thus far this season.
