A player who has made 151 appearances in the Premier League has been observed at Newcastle United, and Everton has broken their reticence regarding his free transfer.

Over the weekend, Paul Dummett, a former Newcastle United defender, made his first competitive appearance in over five months. On Saturday, the 33-year-old defender, who was released by Newcastle over the summer, made

his Wigan Athletic début by coming off the bench. It occurred one day following his signing as a free agent with Wigan on a short-term contract. In Wigan’s 1-0 loss to Wycombe Wanderers at the DW Stadium, Dummett entered the game in the 83rd minute. He was a member of Newcastle’s first squad for more than a decade, appearing in more than 200 matches for his hometown club following his graduation from the academy.

Before joining Wigan to offer a defensive option, Dummett had only played for Newcastle, with the exception of loan stints at Gateshead and St Mirren as a juvenile.

“It’s a big club with a lot of history and it’s been in the Premier League before,

” Dummett stated on the Wigan club website after his debut. He stated, “It was an obvious decision for me to come down here and play when I received the call.”

“I have experienced an unusual summer, as I have been at Newcastle for an extended period of time and have been without a club.”

“When I came down I did have some other offers, but I knew it was the decision I wanted to make and I wanted to sign for Wigan.” It is believed that Dummett engaged in discussions with Portsmouth, a Championship team, during the summer; however, negotiations did not result in a contract.

The defender was also granted access to the Newcastle training site to enhance his fitness while he was out of contract. Additionally, he continued to attend first-team matches and was even observed in the away end at Everton last month, where he was accompanied by the current Newcastle custodian, Mark Gillespie.

However, Newcastle mentor and former Latics striker Graeme Jones ultimately facilitated the transfer to Wigan. Before arriving here, I conversed with him,” Dummett stated.

“I believe people from Wigan spoke to Graeme Jones about me prior to me coming here so he must’ve said some wonderful things for me to be stood here now!” Dummett continued to reflect on his début for Wigan, stating, “It was a pleasure to don the shirt, but we were unable to secure the outcome.

” He concluded that there were no defects in the second half until the six-yard box, but we were unable to capitalise on our opportunities. “The first half we showed a lack of intent, but the second half was much better.”
