27-year-old Celtic defender Liam Scales shoots down ‘daft’ rumour about Martin O’Neill ahead of Celtic boss’s farewell match

Sunday is shaping up to be an emotional day for everyone connected with Celtic.

Martin O’Neill is widely expected to take charge of Celtic for the final time when his side faces Hibernian at Easter Road.

His surprise return last month—initiated by Dermot Desmond—caught plenty of people off guard, including O’Neill himself.
Liam Scales responds to claim about O’Neill before final game

Even before stepping back into the Celtic dugout, and regardless of how this short interim spell played out, O’Neill was already firmly established as a legend of the club.

Yet, during Liam Scales’ press conference, a reporter oddly suggested that O’Neill’s brief return had now “cemented his place in the club’s history.”

It was a strange comment, and Scales immediately corrected it, replying: “I don’t think he needed to come back to do that.”

Ahead of the match, Scales spoke to the media about the Irish manager. The reporter asked if O’Neill had “strengthened his legendary status” with his recent work.
O’Neill’s historic legacy at Celtic

No Scottish club has enjoyed the level of dominance Celtic have shown over the last 25 years, and O’Neill was the man who ignited that era.

Claiming a Treble and overcoming a powerful Rangers side remains one of the defining achievements of modern Scottish football—and more than enough to secure his legendary status, statue talk and all.

Scales reaffirmed that feeling:

“Yeah, definitely. I don’t think he needed to come back to do that. He’s already a legend. You saw the reaction from the fans when he returned, and rightly so. For however long he’s here, if we can keep winning games, that’ll be great for us and great for him too.”
