Celtic Secure €8m Option to Sign Tomas Cvancara Permanently
Celtic will have the option to make Tomas Cvancara’s move from Borussia Monchengladbach permanent at the end of the season, according to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The Hoops have agreed a purchase clause worth €8 million as part of the deal.
The Scottish champions are also set to cover Cvancara’s remaining wages in full until the end of the campaign, with his salary estimated at around €1m gross, equating to roughly £34,000 per week.
Cvancara spent the first half of the season on loan at Turkish side Antalyaspor, scoring twice in 13 appearances.
He joined Monchengladbach from Sparta Prague in the summer of 2023 and has since netted six goals in 49 appearances for the Bundesliga club. During the 2024/25 season, the 25-year-old started seven league matches, scoring twice.
The striker has earned eight caps for Czechia, scoring on his international debut in a 3-1 win over Poland in March 2023, with his most recent appearance coming in October 2024.
Celtic Prioritising Striker Reinforcements
Celtic are keen to add a new striker this month, having relied heavily on Johnny Kenny in recent weeks.
The 22-year-old has scored six goals in 21 appearances across all competitions. Kelechi Iheanacho remains sidelined after suffering another injury in December’s League Cup final, while Shin Yamada has been used mainly from the bench.
Julian Araujo’s loan move from Bournemouth remains Celtic’s only January signing so far, with Odin Holm and Stephen Walsh returning from loan spells.
Since Martin O’Neill replaced Wilfried Nancy earlier this month, Celtic have won all three of their matches and next face Bologna in the Europa League on Thursday.
Further Bundesliga Interest
Celtic are expecting a busy end to the transfer window and could also look to strengthen midfield options. Reports suggest RB Leipzig midfielder Xaver Schlager, who has less than a year remaining on his contract, is among the players being monitored ahead of the February 2 deadline.
