Neil McCann Dismisses Reports of Potential Rangers Role Under Kevin Muscat

Neil McCann has dismissed claims that he was lined up for a coaching role at Rangers under Kevin Muscat as “exaggerated.”

During Rangers’ search for a new head coach, Muscat was reportedly the frontrunner and was understood to be close to agreeing a deal to return to Ibrox, having played for the club for a season during his career. McCann was rumored to be Muscat’s preferred assistant, with suggestions he could even take interim charge while the Australian finished the season with Shanghai Port, who are currently involved in a title race.

The former Rangers winger confirmed that while he and Muscat had previously discussed the possibility of working together—Muscat mentioning he might want McCann as his No.2—there was no formal contact following Russell Martin’s departure.

Speaking on the BBC Scottish Football Podcast, McCann said:

“It’s all speculation. Nobody from the club contacted me about it. Kevin is a former teammate, and yes, we’ve had discussions that if he ever considered coming to Rangers, he asked whether I’d be part of that setup.

“I think everyone just put two and two together, but I was never formally contacted by the club. Of course, it would have been brilliant — I loved my time at Rangers last year and enjoyed being back coaching. But it never reached a stage where it was concrete, so you can’t get carried away by it.”
