What the Italian media said about Sandro Tonali after the Newcastle United midfielder scored his first international goal
The 24-year-old’s close-range strike was instrumental in Italy’s advancement to the quarter-finals of the Nations League. Italy will play their final group encounter against France in Milan on Sunday.
Tonali scored his first competitive goal since his Newcastle United Premier League debut against Aston Villa in August 2023. Tonali has returned to action and has been a consistent starter for the Italy team after serving a 10-month betting suspension.
has made 11 appearances for Newcastle since his return from his suspension, with six of those coming from the start. Although the Italian midfielder has not scored for Newcastle since his debut, he has provided two assists in his last three appearances prior to the international break.
Since his return, Tonali has started all five Nations League matches for Italy and has been a standout performer for his country, contributing two assists and a goal.
He was awarded the man of the match award in the 1-0 victory over Belgium and was praised by the renowned Italian football outlet, Football Italia, for his “calm and controlling” midfield performance. Tonali received a 7.5/10 match rating from Football Italia, which is the joint highest of any player, alongside goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The organisation noted that Tonali “celebrated his 20th cap with his first ever international goal.” Appeared at the appropriate time and in the appropriate location, but did not significantly influence the outcome. The midfielder is also composed and in control.
