Preview: Alaves vs. Atletico Madrid – lineups, team news, and prediction By Matt Law, Football Editor Published: November 21, 2024 | 18:33 Last updated:
November 21, 2024 | 21:25 Atletico Madrid will endeavour to extend their winning streak to five consecutive matches in all competitions when they resume their La Liga campaign against Alaves at Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday afternoon.
are currently 15th in the La Liga table, three points clear of the relegation zone, while Diego Simeone’s team is third, one point behind Real Madrid in second place and seven points behind Barcelona in first.
Atletico has encountered numerous challenges this season, most notably two severe losses in the Champions League. However, they have been relatively consistent in La Liga, recording 26 points from their initial 13 matches of the season, which has placed them in third place.
The team under Simeone has won seven, drawn five, and lost one of their 13 games. They have scored 19 goals, which is only the joint-fifth best attacking record.
However, they have the closest defence, having conceded only seven times. Before the November international break, the Red and Whites were in excellent form, having secured four consecutive victories, including a 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
In October, Atletico suffered consecutive losses to Lille and Benfica in European competition. Consequently, their most recent victory over PSG was significant. Additionally, they secured a 1-0 victory over Mallorca in their final match in Spain’s top division.
The capital titans, who are seven points behind the division leaders Barcelona, are unbeaten at home in the league this season, having earned 14 points from their six matches. They will be hosting an Alaves team that has only one away victory in La Liga during the 2024-25 campaign.
Alaves has accumulated 13 points from their 13 La Liga matches this season, which leaves them in 15th place in the table, three points above the relegation zone.
They have recorded four victories, one draw, and eight defeats. Despite the fact that no team has lost more matches in La Liga this season, four victories is a commendable record at this juncture of the campaign.
The Blue and Whites will be striving to secure consecutive victories over Atletico, as they previously emerged victorious in a 2-0 match in April.
Last season, Alaves placed 10th in La Liga, and they have only been outside of the top division for one of the previous nine seasons. Consequently, they are solidifying their position at this level of football.
The Basque team concluded October with a 1-0 victory over Compostela in the Copa del Rey. They followed this up with a 1-0 victory over Mallorca at the beginning of November. However, they entered the November international break on the heels of a 3-0 defeat to Villarreal.
Luis Garcia’s team has suffered on their travels this season, earning only three points from seven matches and conceding 15 times. This will be a cause for concern prior to their upcoming match at Wanda Metropolitano.
