Callum Wilson fitness update: Newcastle United striker withdrew from the match against Liverpool due to a severe accident.
Callum Wilson’s fitness status has been updated following his withdrawal from the Newcastle United match against Liverpool due to a severe collision.
Callum Wilson earned his first Premier League start of the season for Newcastle United in a 2-0 loss to Liverpool on Wednesday night.
Alexander Isak’s late injury withdrawal resulted in Wilson’s unexpected promotion to the starting lineup at Anfield. It was the striker’s first league start for Newcastle since May 2024 and his third in the past 14 months. On the eve of his 33rd birthday, Wilson played 69 minutes before being substituted by Will Osula.
The striker was substituted 20 minutes after receiving treatment for a vicious head-to-head collision with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. “Yes, I believe he is in good health,” Howe stated to The Gazette. “I believe he will be satisfied with his performance.” I believe he led the line well; we anticipated him playing for approximately 60 minutes.
Wilson failed to capitalise on two one-on-one opportunities during the match. On one occasion, he was flagged for offside, while on the other, he was under duress from Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. However, he was unable to test Alisson on either occasion.
“We incorporated Callum into the game and played in a unique manner. I was satisfied with the appearance of our system and shape; I had no reservations about it.”
“The commitment was present; there were no issues with the effort levels.” This was significantly enhanced from Manchester City; however, our quality was lacking. Wilson may receive his second start in four days if Isak is suspended for the FA Cup fifth-round match against
Brighton & Hove Albion at St James’ Park on Sunday (1:45pm kick-off). Howe is optimistic that the Swede will be able to participate in the encounter, as he has a Premier League match against West Ham United and the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool scheduled for the following month.
