Eddie Howe is in favour of the FA rule change for the Newcastle United game, which was affirmed following a delay in the Premier League. Semi-automated offside technology

(SAOT) will be implemented during the FA Cup fifth-round encounters, at which Premier League teams have been drawn to play at home.

Additionally, the competition will introduce VAR for the first time this season during the encounters. On Sunday at 1:45 p.m., Newcastle will play host to Brighton & Hove Albion at St James’ Park. SAOT is being implemented for the first time in domestic encounters in England; however, Newcastle has previously utilised the technology in competitive matches.

SAOT was implemented for Newcastle’s fixtures in the 2023-24 Champions League. In comparison to the manual approach presently employed by VAR officials in the Premier League, the technology enables significantly faster decisions regarding offside calls. Premier League delays implementation of semi-automated offside technology

The introduction of the new technology in 2024-25 was affirmed in the 2024-25 Premier League handbook; however, it has been postponed. Insofar as the club is responsible for the maintenance of “goal line technology, semi-automated offside technology, and VAR installed at its Stadium,” the handbook mandates that clubs adhere to all applicable requirements.

The Premier League’s concern regarding the efficacy of semi-automated technology has resulted in a delay in its introduction, which was anticipated to occur during the initial months of the season.

The FA Cup fifth-round fixtures are imminent, and the system is prepared for implementation in March. In the fifth round of the 2024-25 Emirates FA Cup, “Semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) will be used for the first time in English football in the seven ties where Premier League sides have been drawn at home,” announced an FA statement.
