The Cowboys have re-signed DT Osa Odighizuwa to a four-year, $80 million contract. Osa Odighizuwa will not be permitted to enter the free agent market by the Cowboys.
On Tuesday, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported that Dallas has re-signed the defensive tackle to a four-year, $80 million contract. Rapoport and Garafolo have reported that the agreement contains a $58 million guarantee.
The Cowboys made the official announcement of the agreement later on Tuesday. Rapoport reported earlier Tuesday morning that the Cowboys were likely to franchise tag Odighizuwa as a placeholder while the parties continued discussions towards a long-term agreement. However, the parties were able to reach an agreement to maintain the DT in Dallas for the long term with only a few hours remaining before the tag Obdighizuwa
, a third-round draft pick in 2021, achieved career highs in sacks (4.5), QB hits (23) and tackles (47) in 2024, the final year of his rookie contract. The 26-year-old has been a consistent performer in the trenches, having started all 17 games in each of the past three seasons.
The Cowboys will retain Odighizuwa in order to prevent a potential mass exodus on their defensive front, rather than allowing their ascending defensive lineman to hit the open market.
Demarcus Lawrence, Carlos Watkins, Linval Joseph, and Chauncey Golston are among the Cowboys defensive linemen who are expected to become free agents upon the commencement of the new league year on March 12.
As co-owner and COO Stephen Jones stated on February 24, Dallas’ initial step towards being “selectively aggressive” this offseason is to secure Odighizuwa’s contract. The significant item that Dallas is currently anticipating is an extension for star defender Micah Parsons.
