On Sunday, Mark Carney, the incoming prime minister of Canada, delivered a defiant statement against the United States. The former central banker pledged to prevail in the trade war initiated by US President Donald Trump.
After being overwhelmingly elected by the Liberal Party to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Carney promptly advocated for “the Canadian way of life.”
“We did not initiate this conflict.” However, Carney assured a boisterous crowd of party supporters in Ottawa that Canadians are consistently prepared for the moment when someone else removes the gloves.
“Consequently, the Americans should be aware that Canada will emerge victorious in trade, as it will in hockey,” stated the 59-year-old, who will succeed Trudeau in the near future.
The position may not remain in Carney’s possession for an extended period.
Elections are required to be conducted in Canada by October; however, it is feasible that a surprise poll may be conducted within the next few weeks. The Conservatives are currently considered slight favourites in the current surveys.
Carney cautioned in his victory speech that the United States, under Trump, was attempting to assume control of Canada.
He stated, “The Americans desire our country, our water, our land, and our resources.”
“These are dark days, dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust.”
He accused Trump of “attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses,” and he emphasised that “We cannot allow him to succeed.”
In Ottawa, party loyalist Cory Stevenson expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, asserting that “the Liberal party has the wind in its sails.”
“We selected the individual who could most effectively confront (Tory leader) Pierre Poilievre in the upcoming election and negotiate with Donald Trump,” he stated to AFP.
Carney has contended that his expertise renders him the optimal opponent to the United States president. He has presented himself as an experienced economic crisis manager who guided the Bank of Canada through the 2008-2009 financial crisis and the Bank of England through the turbulence that ensued after the 2016 Brexit vote.
According to data released by the Angus Reid polling firm on Wednesday,
Carney is the preferred candidate among Canadians to confront Trump, which could provide the Liberals with an advantage over the Conservatives.
Forty-three percent of respondents indicated that they had the highest level of confidence in Carney’s ability to negotiate with Trump, while 34 percent supported Poilievre.
The Liberals were on the brink of an electoral annihilation prior to Trudeau’s resignation announcement in January. However, the race has been significantly constricted by the leadership transition and Trump’s influence.
Frank Baylis, a former MP who also ran for the leadership, stated to AFP, “We were written off about four months ago, and now we’re right back where we should be.”
