While on the phone with NBC News, President Trump said that National Security Adviser Mike Waltz “has learnt a lesson” after an Atlantic reporter was added by mistake to a secret chat about military plans. According to Garrett Haake of NBC News, Trump said that the event had “no effect” on the military strikes in Yemen.
President Donald Trump played down a recent security incident in which writer Jeffrey Goldberg was accidentally added to a Signal group chat where sensitive military operations against Yemen’s Houthi rebels were being talked about. High-level officials like National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth were in the chat, which was meant to be a secret communication tool. Trump said that it was “the only glitch in two months,” and he made sure to stress that no secret information was lost and that the operation went well.
Concerns were raised about the safety of using commercial message apps to talk about national security issues after Goldberg joined the chat. Democratic politicians have called for investigations into the breach and criticised the administration for what they see as carelessness. But Trump has stood up for Waltz and said that he is a “good man” who has learnt from what happened.
The event has led to a larger discussion about the government’s use of private messaging systems and the possible risks that come with using apps like Signal to talk about sensitive information. The administration’s answer shows that worries about how sensitive data is handled and the safety steps in place for the country are still present.
