The 2024-25 season of the Memphis Grizzlies was initiated with anticipation, but it ultimately ended in disappointment. The team encountered internal turmoil, which culminated in the unexpected dismissal of head coach Taylor Jenkins in late March, despite a strong 36-18 start.
The Grizzlies achieved a postseason berth under the leadership of head coach Tuomas Iisalo; however, they were defeated in the opening round by the Oklahoma City Thunder. In Game 3, Memphis’ historic collapse occurred when star guard Ja Morant sustained a hip injury following a hard fall, resulting in the squandering of a 29-point lead. This was a critical moment.
Although the Grizzlies’ front office publicly declares that they have “zero interest” in trading the two-time All-Star, league-wide rumors persist. Tim MacMahon of ESPN stated on the Hoop Collective Podcast that there is “whispering and rumbling” within the league regarding Morant’s prospective availability.
In the midst of this uncertainty, Jaylen Wells, the Grizzlies’ outstanding rookie, expressed his unwavering support for Morant. In an interview with FanDuel’s NBA program “Run It Back,” Wells was inquired about his desire to collaborate with Morant in the forthcoming season.
“Certainly,” he replied. “I am uncertain as to what Memphis would be without Ja.”
Since his selection as the second overall decision in the 2019 NBA Draft, Morant has been the face of the Grizzlies and has achieved significant accomplishments during his tenure. Morant has guided Memphis to the postseason on four occasions during his five-year tenure, including the 2022 season, in which they were eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round.
The Grizzlies are confronted with critical personnel decisions as the offseason approaches, with Morant’s future at the forefront.
