“I probably wasn’t ready” – Celtic F.C. Defender Liam Scales shares his honest verdict about his career at Celtic so far

Liam Scales is a player that Celtic fans have mixed feelings about.

The big Irish back has had a great time at Celtic, where he has helped win three league titles, two League Cups, and a Scottish Cup.

But all of that seemed impossible just two short years ago, when Scales was on his way out of Parkhead. It wasn’t until injuries to the Celtic first team that the 26-year-old got his chance to stay at the club.

Scales was about to leave Celtic after a season on loan at Aberdeen, but he took his chance and has been a big part of Brendan Rodgers’ success since he came back to Paradise in 2023.

Because of this, Scales has talked about his time at the club and said something about his Celtic journey that many fans will agree with.

Liam Scales says his big break with Celtic was a “free hit.”

Scales was one of Aberdeen’s best players during his loan season, where he played 39 times.

Scales’ goal in The Dons’ 2-0 win over Rangers during his loan spell won over the fans, and plans were made to make the move permanent.

As luck would have it, Scales took his chance at Celtic, and in this first part, he gives a bluntly honest review of his time there.

Scales told The Herald (Ireland), “In order to get where they are, everyone at the club has had to work very hard. I’m no different.” Even though the cup final will hurt, this season has been a success all around.

“When I first moved here, I probably wasn’t ready to jump right in and play. It took me time.” The 39 games I played on loan at Aberdeen that season possibly helped me bridge the gap and get used to Scottish football, which was great.

“When I got back to Celtic, I had some good luck because a few players got hurt.” It’s likely that I didn’t see myself in the picture as much as I did in it.

“Once I got the chance, it was almost a free hit.” I had the chance to play and start in the spot I wanted. I thought, “If I don’t play well, nothing will change because I’m probably going to leave on loan anyway. But if I do well, I have a chance to stake my claim.” I’ve loved every minute of it.

So far, Liam Scales’ Celtic career has been very bright.
Scales is under contract with Celtic until 2028, so he has at least two years to help the team do better. Here are some of the things that the Republic of Ireland player has done so far.

Without a question, Scales’ best moment was scoring a goal in Celtic’s 5-1 win over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League:
