Newcastle United’s neglected man is expected to join Celtic after the £63m duo is disqualified. Newcastle’s first-team squad, with the exception of

international players, are scheduled to return to Darsley Park for training on July 7, in anticipation of a rigorous preseason schedule. On July 19, the Magpies will play their inaugural preseason match at Celtic Park (3 p.m. kick-off). They have also organized a training exercise in Europe that will be

conducted behind closed doors prior to their departure for Singapore, where they will face off against their Premier League rivals, Arsenal, on July 27. Newcastle concludes their preseason in England with a Sela Weekender double header against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid on August 8 and 9, respectively. The Premier League season commences the following weekend at Aston Villa (12:30pm kick-off).

At present, the focus is on Newcastle’s inaugural pre-season friendly against Celtic and the inclusion of any new players in the match against the Scottish Premiership champions. Sandro Tonali made his debut in black and white for the Magpies during their most recent visit to Glasgow, where he faced Rangers during the preseason.

Newcastle is anticipating the acquisition of an additional high-profile player in the near future as they prepare to reenter the Champions League. However, injuries, limited transfer activity, and international players may result in some peripheral players being selected at Celtic Park. Matt Targett has been selected for a preseason opportunity.

As the preseason commences, left-back Matt Targett may assume the role of Newcastle’s starting left-back due to the absence of Tino Livramento with the England Under-21s and the injury of Lewis Hall. It has been nearly two years since Targett last started a Premier League game for Newcastle, and his most recent campaigns have been plagued by injury. A quadriceps injury necessitated the termination of his 2024/25 season.

Newcastle acquired the 29-year-old from Aston Villa for £15 million in 2022 following an impressive loan period. The Magpies are prepared to release Targett this summer, as he enters the final year of his contract at St. James’ Park, after three years and seven Premier League appearances. However, he will have the opportunity to demonstrate his fitness and impress during the

preseason, as Hall and Livramento are expected to be unavailable for the Celtic match. Tino Livramento is striving for the European Championship title. Livramento has been in Slovakia this month for the Under-21 European Championships with England, where he has performed admirably at both left and right back for Lee Carsley’s team.

The 22-year-old is gearing up to face Germany in the final on Saturday evening (8pm kick-off) as England endeavors to defend their Under-21 Euro title. Before rejoining the squad later in the month, Livramento will be granted an extended respite in July.
