Revealed: Manchester United net fee from the 22-year-old defender Alvaro Fernandez Real Madrid transfer latest

Previously, he was known as Alvaro Fernandez at Manchester United, but he did not receive a single strike. Presently, he is a member of Real Madrid.

The transfer of Alvaro Carreras to Real Madrid has the potential to generate a sum of up to £7.5 million for Manchester United.

On Monday, Madrid acquired the left back Fernandez from Benfica for €43 million, and United are entitled to a 15% sell-on fee.

Last year, Benfica acquired Fernandez, 22, from United for €9 million. United inserted a buy-back clause that was never implemented.

Carreras, who was previously known as Fernandez, was acquired by United from Real Madrid’s academy at the age of 17 in 2020. He was awarded the title of under-21 player of the year in 2021-22; however, he failed to make a competitive appearance for the club.

In the final four games of the 2021-22 season, Interim United manager Ralf Rangnick placed Fernandez on the bench before Erik ten Hag assumed responsibility.

During Fernandez’s tenure at United, the club acquired Tyrell Malacia, a left back who they are currently seeking to transfer, signed Luke Shaw to a four-year contract, and recruited Sergio Reguilon, whose season-long loan was terminated in early January 2024.

While Fernandez was under contract at United, Ten Hag also utilized at least three right-footers at left back: Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Sofyan Amrabat, and Diogo Dalot. Both Toby Collyer and Noussair Mazraoui, who are right-footed, also played at left back last season.

Fernandez was only included in the matchday squad once by Ten Hag, which was against Nottingham Forest in August 2023. Upon being questioned about the decision to sell Fernandez last year in light of the club’s persistent issues at left back, Ten Hag stated, “I believe the process is flawless.”

“We loaned him to Preston, and he returned. Subsequently, we loaned him to Granada, but he did not play as much there. Additionally, we monitored him throughout the entire period.”

“We had the opportunity to sell him; however, we have a buy-back agreement, which allows us to maintain control of the situation.” However, I believe that Preston was the necessary step for him to progress to La Liga and then Portugal, each time advancing to a more advanced club and league. Therefore, we must evaluate the circumstance to determine whether he may be a viable option for us in the future.

“However, it is not an effortless endeavor to compete in the Premier League and for Manchester United.” Experience and development are essential, and they are acquired by participating in more competitive leagues and societies.
