Man United has five clear choices in the middle of the field, but most of them have problems.
Manchester United can’t sign a player because they already have Casemiro, who makes a lot of money.
Sources in the know say that four middle-men were told to try to sell Casemiro. He is in the last year of his deal with United and makes around £300,000 a week.
Under the Premier League’s rules on profitability and sustainability, United would need to get £15 million for Casemiro in order to avoid losing money on the player. However, they are not expected to get an offer.
Casemiro, 33, played very well in United’s Europa League playoff games, but the club was looking to sell the Brazilian during the winter transfer window, when he didn’t play for a month.
United wants to add someone to their central midfield, but Casemiro is only one of five choices they already have. To be able to improve the area, the club would need to either make a lot of money or move a high-earner.
Bruno Fernandes will forever play in the middle of the field, and United promised in August to spend £50 million on Manuel Ugarte. So far this season, head coach Ruben Amorim has used Kobbie Mainoo to set up plays, while Toby Collyer has only played three games.
United offered Mainoo a new deal at the beginning of the year, but he turned it down. Ugarte’s play in the last few games of last season was so bad that Casemiro started in the Europa League final instead of him.
United got rid of Christian Eriksen last month and spent £133.5 million on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to improve their attack. They also want to add a center forward.
The club has looked at many goalkeepers, but Andre Onana’s recent illness has made things more difficult there. United also doesn’t want to sell Onana seriously.
Casemiro moved from Real Madrid to Manchester United in August 2022 for £60 million, which could go up to £70 million. After a great first season, he didn’t have as much of an impact until March, when he was brought back into the starting lineup for the Europa League round of 16.
After the second match against Sociedad, Amorim said, “I’m getting better at how I use a player like Casemiro.” The Brazil star came back to the national team last month after being away for 18 months.
