The Miami Dolphins defeated the Detroit Lions 24-17 in the preseason on Saturday, with backup quarterback Zach Wilson throwing for two second-half touchdowns and third-stringer Quinn Ewers having an effective first half.
Earlier in the week, the teams conducted two simultaneous practices. Both teams’ starters participated in the workouts; however, the reserves were the primary focus of Saturday’s competition as they sought to secure roster spots.
Wilson, who is the Dolphins’ second-ranked quarterback behind Tua Tagovailoa, completed 15 of 23 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. Ewers completed 11 of 17 passes for 116 yards.
Jared Goff was on the sideline, and the Lions also conducted a thorough evaluation of their second- and third-string quarterbacks. Kyle Allen demonstrated exceptional performance in the initial half, completing 14 of 17 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Hendon Hooker encountered difficulties in the final two quarters, completing only six of his thirteen passes for a total of 61 yards and an interception.
On ten carries, Ollie Gordon II accumulated 50 yards of rushing for the Lions. Jacob Saylor amassed 39 yards on 13 carries.
Wilson’s 11-yard pass to Dee Eskridge in the final minutes of the first quarter gave the Dolphins a 7-0 advantage. Midway through the second quarter, Detroit tied the game with an 11-yard pass from Allen to Jackson Meeks.
In the final two minutes of the first half, Miami advanced to the Detroit 9; however, Isaac Ukwu sacked Wilson on fourth-and-4.
With 30 seconds remaining, Isaac TeSlaa caught an 18-yard pass from Allen, securing a 14-7 halftime lead for the Lions.
Ewers’ initial drive culminated in a 15-yard touchdown pass to Theo Wease Jr., which tied the game. However, a fumbled punt resulted in a 33-yard field goal by Jake Bates, which gave the Lions a 17-14 advantage.
With 12:22 remaining, Ewers connected with Wease for an 8-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 21-17. Jason Sanders then converted a 21-yard field goal with 1:53 remaining, bringing the game to a seven-point margin.
In the final 30 seconds, the Lions advanced to the Miami 13; however, Ethan Robinson intercepted Hooker’s pass with 22 seconds remaining.
