Newcastle United’s heart broke in the 100th minute when they lost 3-2 to Liverpool after being down to 10 players.
It was another exciting meeting. Then Bruno Guimaraes scored to make it 2-2, and Will Osula, who came on as a replacement, scored the equalizer in the 89th minute. Not for Rio Ngumoha, 16, who came on as a replacement in the 100th minute to win the game for Liverpool. The 22-year-old would have been the talk of the town while Alexander Isak was out.
Liverpool beat Newcastle 2-0 at St. James’ Park, but Newcastle came back from being down 2-0 with 10 men to tie the game at 2-2 with 11 minutes left in extra time.
One goal each from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike made it 2-0 to Liverpool after Anthony Gordon was sent off for a straight red card.
Eddie Howe thinks about the loss to Newcastle United
Howe told Match of the Day after the game, “I think the players did great in both the first and second halves, but in very different ways.”
In the first half, we thought we were in charge of the game. With just one goal left, we were in a great spot. We had to come back from being down 2-0 with 10 men in the second half, but I thought we had control of the game.
“I thought we played great. We fought back so hard, but we couldn’t get over the line to get a point.”
When you play against 11 men, especially a good team like Liverpool, I think it’s hard. The first goal was important because it gave us hope and brought us back into the game. We always thought that even if the score was tied, we could still win.
Howe said this about Gordon’s red card: “Yeah, I’ve seen it once, and it was very rushed.”
“It was during the game or right after it started up again, so I wanted to see it and then move on right away.” I don’t think he meant to do it, and he went in possibly too quickly. As he went in to slide, I think he was trying to get away without hurting Virgil.
“It’s a bad one; I think he’s having a bad day with it.” I’ve been told it’s a clear red. My first thought was a little different, but I think I see things from the wrong angle, so I feel sorry for him.
The Premier League releases a red card message.
The quote from Hooper explaining his VAR overturn was put on X by the Premier League Match Centre, which posts statements explaining VAR decisions during games.
“#NEWLIV – 45+1′ VAR OVERTURN” was written on the note. The judge changed his on-field decision to give Anthony Gordon a yellow card after VAR looked at it. “After review, the Newcastle United number 10 commits a serious foul play challenge,” the referee said. The challenge comes at fast speed and hits the Liverpool number 4 in the calf. I’m going to give Newcastle United’s number 10 a red card.””
