The Newcastle United 2025/26 Champions League squad has been officially announced.
Newcastle United has submitted its Champions League squad to UEFA following the conclusion of the summer transfer window.
A ‘List A’ of up to 25 players eligible to participate in the Champions League group phase matches must be submitted by clubs by September 2, as stipulated by UEFA regulations. However, this deadline has already past.
Furthermore, clubs are permitted to submit a “List B” of individuals who satisfy specific criteria no later than the day preceding any matchday.
Newcastle will commence their Champions League campaign against Barcelona at St James’ Park on September 18 at 8 p.m. The Magpies will then face Union Saint-Gilloise (A), Benfica (H), Athletic Club (H), Marseille (A), Bayer Leverkusen (A), PSV Eindhoven (H), and Paris Saint-Germain (A).
Over the summer, Newcastle sold Alexander Isak and club-trained player Sean Longstaff. However, they have since strengthened their squad by signing Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale, Malick Thiaw, Jacob Ramsey, Nick Woltemade, and Yoane Wissa.
Newcastle United is subject to penalties under UEFA regulations when it submits its squad manifest.
Newcastle has been penalized this season by the strict UEFA regulations that mandate the inclusion of four “club-trained” players in their squad in order to meet the entire 25-player limit.
Newcastle has no senior club-trained players in their squad as a result of the departures of Elliot Anderson and Sean Longstaff over the past two summers. The sole recognized first-team player who satisfies the “club-trained” criteria is 19-year-old Lewis Miley, who is exempt from inclusion in the “List A” squad due to his age.
A player who has been registered with their current club for a minimum of three complete seasons between the ages of 15 and 21, irrespective of their nationality, is considered to have been club-trained.
Newcastle is limited to designating a squad of only 21 players, as there are no club-trained players in their ‘List A’, as opposed to the maximum allocation of 25.
In contrast to the Premier League, athletes born on or after January 1, 2004, are required to be included in the ‘List A’ unless they have been eligible to play for their club for a continuous period of two years.
Lewis Hall was included in Newcastle’s ‘List A’ during their previous Champions League campaign as a new transfer, but he is now eligible for ‘List B’ and will not occupy a squad spot. This rule was the reason for his inclusion. Eddie Howe will have additional options when selecting his squad, as Miley will also be included in ‘List B’.
UEFA regulations necessitate that a minimum of three goalkeepers be included in each of the two squad listings. Newcastle will not encounter any complications with this requirement.
Newcastle United’s squad for the UEFA Champions League is composed of 21 players.
Newcastle has 25 senior players who are eligible to be named in the club’s Champions League squad, with the exception of Hall and Miley. However, there were only 21 available spaces.
Howe was left with two additional players to omit from his squad, including Harrison Ashby, who was made available for a loan transfer over the summer, and fourth-choice goalkeeper Mark Gillespie.
Newcastle had the option of excluding third-choice goalkeeper John Ruddy if they were to identify an Under-21s goalkeeper on their ‘List B’.
The previous time, Emil Krafth was unable to participate in Newcastle’s Champions League squad due to his recovery from a severe ACL injury. However, he has demonstrated his reliability as a squad member under Howe. Newcastle’s previous Champions League campaign was captained by Jamaal Lascelles, who has since fallen behind in the succession order due to intense competition for the position of center back.
Newcastle’s midfielder Joe Willock has yet to appear this season, as the inclusion of Jacob Ramsey has diminished his likelihood of doing so.
The club also attempted to sell William Osula on deadline day after agreeing to a deal to sign Yoane Wissa. Only in emergencies or against lower-league opposition in cup competitions has the Danish striker started games for Newcastle.
Ruddy and Lascelles were ultimately removed from Newcastle’s squad, and the complete report is provided below.
