Manager Ruben Amorim wanted to sign an athletic playmaker for Manchester United, but they were not able to do so.
The Red Devils added five exciting players to their senior team at the end of the 2025 transfer window. Their names are Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Diego Leon, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens.
Even though INEOS did a great job with the window, it wasn’t a truly perfect summer because they didn’t add anyone to the middle.
We’ll look at four main reasons why United wasn’t able to sign a player.
1) Casemiro wants to play in the World Cup
When Amorim joined United, Casemiro dropped to fifth-choice in the middle of the field. But the Brazilian fought back and was a big reason why United made it to the UEFA Europa League final.
The 32-year-old player was great in the Europa League, but he still had trouble getting used to the Premier League’s fast pace.
Many people thought that United could afford to sell Casemiro since they didn’t have any European games coming up.
At the moment, the playmaker makes the most money at United, taking home around £350,000 a week.
If they had sold him, they could have used the money to sign a dynamic playmaker, but Amorim doesn’t have any players that fit that description right now.
He wants to play for Brazil in the 2026 World Cup, and he knows that staying at United instead of moving to Saudi will give him the best chance to please manager Carlo Ancelotti.
2) A lot of money was spent on Benjamin Sesko
United had to decide whether to focus on getting a center forward or a midfielder after Cunha and Mbeumo were signed.
The club chose the first option after Director of Football Jason Wilcox pushed them to do so.
It cost £73.6 million to get Sesko from RB Leipzig.
The money could have been used to buy a big-name player like Carlos Baleba if United had instead signed Danny Welbeck on a cheap deal and kept Rasmus Hojlund for another year.
3) The signings of Jadon Sancho and Antony Baleba: United wanted Baleba for the middle spot, but Brighton & Hove Albion wanted more than £100 million for him.
Antony went to Betis for only £21.7 million, and Sancho was sent out on loan again the next day.
At first, they thought Antony was worth £40m, but they were willing to let go of the England player for just £20m.

Two players who were out of favor would have brought in an extra £40 million, which would have been enough to give the young midfielder a chance to try out with the Seagulls.
4) The mess with the goalie
United was ready to back Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir for the new season, even though they had seen how poorly they played the previous two years.
Many sources said that the club wasn’t actively trying to find a replacement for Onana, who was set to stay in goal as the first choice.
Bayindir made a mistake that helped Arsenal win the first Premier League game by three points.
Onana was picked to play at Grimsby, but he made two terrible mistakes that let the home team take a big lead and finally knock United out of the Carabao Cup.
Royal Antwerp decided to take Lammens for about £18.2 million on the last day of the transfer window.
You could have used these funds to borrow money to buy a new player.
