The Chicago Bears were humiliated by the Detroit Lions in Ben Johnson’s return to Ford Field, where his offense was unable to meet the challenge and his defense was rendered ineffective. The final score was 52-21.
It is difficult to identify any positive aspects of a football team’s 52-21 loss. Currently, the Bears are not in a favorable state. The franchise is experiencing a period of darkness, despite the significant amount of anticipation surrounding the 2025 season.
However, they must continue to advance and commence their preparations for the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3. During this process, they may examine a few of the positive plays they made against the Lions on Sunday. The following three are particularly noteworthy:
1. Rome Odunze’s initial touchdown pass from Caleb Williams
2Caleb Williams, the quarterback, executed a straightforward pass to Rome Odunze, the wide receiver, who transformed it into a special play. This play demonstrated the Bears’ resilience in the aftermath of their opening-drive touchdown loss to the Lions. After completing the reception, Odunze executed a deceptive maneuver to avoid being grappled before executing a long run into the end zone. This is the composition of a player who was selected in the top 10.
Odunze may be the sole Bears player who emerges from Sunday’s game with satisfaction regarding his performance. It is evident that everyone is accountable for a loss; however, Odunze fulfilled his obligations (despite his difficulties in the second half). During this play, Williams executed an exceptional pass to locate him for his second touchdown of the game. This play was also significant in that it brought the Bears within one score at the time of the play. They did not lose the narrative until the second half. Odunze concluded the contest with seven receptions, 128 yards, and two touchdowns.
3. D’Andre Swift scores a touchdown without being touched.
D’Andre Swift is an adequate running back. At times, he appears to be deserving of the free agent contract that the Bears awarded him, while at other times, one is left wondering where he went. Swift scored a touchdown by effortlessly passing through an opening on this play. He was content to add another score to his season total, despite the fact that the Bears were already being humiliated at this juncture. He completed the contest with 12 carries, accumulating 63 yards. He also caught three passes for a total of six yards, which is not a great performance. However, it begs the question of how the Bears could have mishandled him in such a manner.
It is challenging to identify any noteworthy plays in a game of this nature; however, the three scoring plays are logical, particularly the initial two, as Williams and Odunze appear to be developing a rapport. In Week 2, the Bears’ season concluded due to a lack of offensive flair, penalties that resulted in the loss of rushes, and a lack of defense.
