Newcastle United Injury Update: Wissa sidelined, Woltemade fitness carefully managed
Eddie Howe has confirmed that new £55m signing Yoane Wissa will be unavailable until after the international break, though the striker has avoided surgery on his knee injury. The DR Congo international, who picked up the knock on international duty, is expected to miss at least seven matches in what has been a frustrating start to life at St James’ Park. With the Africa Cup of Nations also on the horizon, Wissa could be absent for up to nine games during his first months as a Magpie.
Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s Carabao Cup tie against Bradford City, Howe admitted the injury has left his side short in attack:
“He’s here and he’s receiving treatment, no operation needed. We’re looking at the other side of the international break and hope he’ll be fit for that first game back.”
Meanwhile, Howe also revealed that fellow summer arrival Nick Woltemade will not be rushed into playing every game, with concerns over his fitness in the physically demanding Premier League.
“It would be dangerous to play him too much, too soon. The schedule is relentless, and he needs time to adapt. Right now, the best way to keep him fit is by managing his minutes.”
The German forward scored on his debut against Wolves and has shown glimpses of quality against Barcelona and Bournemouth, but Howe insists his development must be handled carefully. He also noted that Wissa’s absence has made it harder to share the attacking burden.
“If Wissa was fit, it would help us build Nick’s fitness gradually. That’s why we need him back quickly – he’s got a big role to play this season.”
