Ex-Rangers Star Derek Ferguson Admits He Wanted to Leave Genk Defeat Early

Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson has confessed he considered leaving Ibrox before the final whistle during last night’s 1-0 Europa League loss to Genk — only staying put because of his punditry duties.

Ex-Celtic forward Oh Hyeon-gyu scored the game’s only goal on 55 minutes, with Russell Martin’s side reduced to ten men after Mohamed Diomande’s first-half red card. Ferguson, working for BBC Scotland’s Sportsound, admitted the performance left him frustrated and sympathetic towards the fans.

“I thought about leaving the Rangers match early — but I had to stay because of work.”

“You’re looking for energy and passion to get the crowd going,” Ferguson said. “The fans deserve far better. It just felt like Rangers let the game drift away. When you’re down to ten men late on, just get the ball forward and make something happen — that comes down to the manager.”

He added: “It doesn’t look like there’s any belief in these players. Honestly, I was ready to walk out with ten minutes left, but I remembered I was working. That’s how it felt — the supporters are being short-changed.”
