Newcastle United F.C. coach Eddie Howe gives his take on Arteta’s post-match assessment following Newcastle’s dramatic victory

Arsenal mounted a dramatic late comeback to beat Newcastle United 2-1 at St James’ Park, ending a run of three consecutive defeats on Tyneside.

Nick Woltemade’s first-half header had given Newcastle the lead, but former Magpies midfielder Mikel Merino levelled for Arsenal six minutes from time before Gabriel snatched a winner in the 96th minute.

The result means Newcastle have now won just once in their opening six Premier League games, with two of their three home losses coming to stoppage-time goals.
After the match, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta hailed his side’s perseverance. “Unbelievable feeling — that’s what football is about.

When you get what you deserve at the end, it’s special,” he said. “We showed conviction, adapted to different types of games, and still found a way to win.

This is one of the toughest grounds to come to, and Newcastle make it so hard.”
Eddie Howe, meanwhile, admitted frustration at his side’s defending, particularly from set pieces. “They’re very different goals, but both come from the same source.

We didn’t do our jobs well enough individually or collectively,” he explained. “The number and weight of corners told in the end. We’d dealt with so many of them, but the last one was a killer blow. At that stage of the game, we had to do better.”
