Chris Wilder Sent Off After Kicking Ball at Sheffield United Fans in Frustration

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder was dramatically sent off during the clash with Southampton after lashing out at a ball in frustration and accidentally booting it into his own supporters.

The incident unfolded right on half-time at Bramall Lane, with the Blades leading 1-0 thanks to Tyrese Campbell’s 28th-minute strike. On his way to the tunnel, Wilder kicked a loose ball into the stands, later retrieving it himself to apologise to the startled fans.

His anger appeared to stem from a controversial penalty decision moments earlier, when referee Adam Hergzec ruled goalkeeper Michael Cooper had fouled striker Ross Stewart. Luckily for United, Adam Armstrong blazed the spot-kick over the bar.

Despite Wilder’s quick apology, the referee showed no leniency. As the manager returned to the touchline, Hergzec produced a red card, sending the Blades boss off.

Things soon unravelled for Sheffield United as Stewart struck twice in quick succession after the restart to hand Southampton their first league victory since August 9.

The match was just Wilder’s third game in charge since returning for a third stint at Bramall Lane following Ruben Selles’ dismissal. After defeats to Charlton and Sunderland under Selles, Wilder steadied the ship with a crucial win at Oxford United before this fiery showdown with the Saints.
