Newcastle United injury update: Eddie Howe on Yoane Wissa setback
Yoane Wissa’s long-awaited Newcastle debut has been delayed after Eddie Howe confirmed the striker has suffered a minor setback in his recovery.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park, Howe explained that the 27-year-old is now expected to be out for closer to eight weeks rather than the initial six.
“We’re still working to the original plan, which was after the international break,” Howe initially said following Wednesday’s 4-0 Champions League win over Union Saint-Gilloise. “He hasn’t been on the grass yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see.”
However, after a fresh consultation with a specialist, the diagnosis has been revised. Howe added: “He went back for a check-up and it looks more like eight weeks than six. There’s been no setback or recurrence, just a slightly longer recovery period.”
That timeline means Wissa could return around Newcastle’s trip to West Ham on November 2.
On the wider squad picture, Howe confirmed there were no new injury concerns.
He also revealed that Tino Livramento, who had also seen a specialist this week, has been given a similar eight-week timeframe. “It’s a blow, especially with the number of games we’ve got coming up, but it could have been a lot worse,” the head coach said.
