Rangers suffer Europa League financial blow after Sturm Graz defeat
Rangers missed out on valuable UEFA prize money following their disappointing 2-1 Europa League loss to Sturm Graz on Thursday night.
The defeat piles further pressure on manager Russell Martin, whose side have now lost both of their opening group-stage matches. Sturm Graz raced into a 2-0 lead inside 35 minutes before Djeidi Gassama pulled one back for Rangers, but the Scottish side couldn’t find an equaliser in Austria.
The result leaves the Ibrox club bottom of their group with no points after defeats to Genk and Sturm Graz — and without any financial reward from UEFA. Under this season’s Europa League format, teams receive £389,000 for each win and £130,000 for a draw in the league phase.
With Sturm Graz claiming the victory, Rangers earned nothing from the match.
Martin’s side will look to bounce back when they travel to Norway to face Brann on October 23.
