31-year-old Ex-Celtic striker Tony Watt opens up on the real reason behind his move to Bulgaria.

Tony Watt may forever be best remembered for one unforgettable moment, but his football journey has certainly been eventful.

At just **18 years old**, the striker etched his name into Celtic folklore when his goal sealed a historic victory over **Barcelona**. The following season, **Neil Lennon** sent him out on loan to Belgian side **Lierse**, where Watt impressed by scoring **eight goals in nine starts** at the age of 19.

However, under **Ronny Deila**, Watt fell out of favour, prompting a move to **Standard Liège**. From that point on, his career became something of a whirlwind — switching clubs almost every season in search of stability and opportunity.

In **2019**, Watt took his talents abroad once again, joining **CSKA Sofia** in Bulgaria following a spell with **St Johnstone**, where he managed just two league goals. In Sofia, he reunited with fellow ex-Celtic player **Graham Carey**.

Speaking with *Foreign Fields* about his time overseas, Watt reflected candidly on what led to his move to Bulgaria — and his response was as honest as it gets.

> “It was simply the contract offer I got — and it was… (laughs) it was good,” Watt admitted.
>
> “At that point, it was the best option for me, so I went. Sofia was a lovely place — beautiful, really. My wife came with me, and we both enjoyed our time there.”

While Watt’s career has taken him across Europe with its fair share of highs and lows, his openness about the realities behind his decisions shows a player who’s always been willing to take bold steps — both on and off the pitch.
