Brendan Rodgers has shared his thoughts on Scott Brown’s red card during the Wim Jansen Cup match in the Netherlands over the weekend — joking that the Celtic icon’s trademark fiery spirit might have gotten the better of him, even in a charity fixture. The Hoops legend was dismissed late in the game after conceding a penalty in the final moments of Sunday’s clash.
Speaking to Celtic TV ahead of this weekend’s meeting with Dundee, Rodgers was asked about the incident that saw his former captain sent off in the Celtic Legends vs Feyenoord Legends encounter.
Although the Celtic boss admitted he hadn’t seen the full clip, he said the outcome didn’t surprise him:
“I haven’t seen exactly why, but I can probably imagine he’s still ultra-competitive, even though he’s been retired for a few years,” Rodgers said.
“He’ll never lose that edge, and maybe stepping onto foreign soil came with a slightly different attitude than they were expecting over there.
But he’s a great guy, an incredible servant for Celtic, and it’s nice to see he’s still got that fire in him.”
Brown was shown a straight red for a strong tackle on Thomas Buffel in the 86th minute, sparking a brief confrontation with the referee — whose bodycam caught the entire exchange. Despite his protests, the decision stood, even though replays suggested it was a clean, well-timed challenge.
Adding a touch of irony to the weekend, Barry Robson — who had been in the opposite dugout a day earlier — was also seen contesting the referee’s call. Brown’s Ayr United had defeated Robson’s Raith Rovers the day before, but both men will now return to their respective clubs to prepare for this weekend’s fixtures.
