The NFL has officially reduced Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch’s suspension, clearing him to play in this week’s Monday Night Football showdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Branch was originally suspended for one game after striking Kansas City Chiefs receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster following the Lions’ 30–17 defeat last Sunday. The 22-year-old admitted his actions were fueled by frustration, claiming Smith-Schuster had delivered an “illegal blindside block” that went uncalled by officials.
Following an appeal hearing earlier in the week, the league revised its disciplinary ruling — lifting the suspension but imposing a record fine of $63,122 instead. The NFL explained that the decision took into account Branch’s clean record and his prompt public apology after the incident.
“I made a mistake,” Branch said. “It was an emotional moment, and I take full responsibility. I’m grateful for the opportunity to move forward and help my team win.”
Lions head coach Dan Campbell supported the league’s decision, praising Branch’s maturity in handling the situation.
“He knows what he did was wrong, but he’s taken responsibility like a pro,” Campbell said. “He’s a great kid with a lot of heart — just let his emotions get the best of him for a moment.”
With Branch reinstated, the Lions (4–2) gain a timely boost to their defense. However, they still face depth challenges in the secondary, as D.J. Reed, Terrion Arnold, and Avonte Maddox remain sidelined with injuries. Campbell confirmed that contingency plans are in place but described Branch’s return as “a huge lift” for the team heading into Monday night.
