Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew has dismissed Hearts’ title hopes, claiming they have “no chance” of winning the Scottish Premiership and that their impressive early-season form won’t last.
The Jambos currently sit five points clear of Celtic after a superb start, and that gap could stretch to eight if they beat Brendan Rodgers’ struggling side at Tynecastle next Sunday.
Speaking on Premier Sports during commentary of Hearts’ 3-0 win over Kilmarnock, Mulgrew didn’t hold back:
“Enjoy it while it lasts. I don’t think this is going to last.”
His comments sparked backlash from Hearts fans online, but the ex-Scotland international doubled down on social media, replying:
“Enjoy eight good results. You’ll be at least eight points behind come March.
I’d love nothing more than a genuine challenge outside Celtic and Rangers, but the truth is you don’t know what it takes to win week after week over a whole season. Good luck.”
Mulgrew’s remarks have split opinion — some labelled them arrogant, while others said his title-winning experience gives weight to his blunt assessment.
Meanwhile, Celtic are heading into a must-win showdown at Tynecastle. Anything short of three points could leave Rodgers’ men with a major uphill battle just two months into the campaign.
The pressure is mounting, with fans demanding more urgency and creativity from a Celtic side criticised for playing uninspired, predictable football. Before the crucial league clash, Rodgers’ team must also navigate European competition later this week.
