Rangers have appointed Danny Rohl as their new manager following a lengthy selection process that included several candidates being considered for the Ibrox role.
Just days earlier, Kevin Muscat appeared poised to take the job, with reports suggesting final negotiations were nearing completion. However, the move collapsed in a late twist, as the club was unwilling to wait for the Australian to finish the Chinese Super League season with Shanghai Port.
Although Muscat ultimately missed out, one of his former players, Mitch Austin, told Ibrox News exactly what Rangers have lost by not appointing him. Austin joined Melbourne Victory in 2016, three years after Muscat succeeded Ange Postecoglou as head coach.
Rangers’ sporting director Kevin Thelwell has faced criticism over his handling of the managerial search, with several candidates entering and dropping out of contention before Rohl’s confirmation.
Known for his fiery personality and no-nonsense approach, Muscat picked up 12 red cards during his playing career — a ruthless edge many fans felt the current Rangers squad could use after a poor start to the season.
However, Austin revealed that Muscat is more measured than his reputation suggests, explaining that he prefers to reflect before reacting to setbacks.
