Frank Lampard in his post match press conference over Patrick Bamford

Frank Lampard has explained why he allowed former Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford to train with Coventry City at Ryton.

The 32-year-old forward arrived at the Sky Blues’ training ground on Thursday after reaching out to Lampard — his former Chelsea teammate — and was invited to join sessions to maintain his fitness while searching for a new club.

When asked if he was simply doing Bamford a favour, Lampard told CoventryLive:

“Yeah, I suppose you could call it that. I know Patrick well, and since he’s currently without a club, he’s been training with us. I’m really happy to have him here — he’s a great lad and very easy to work with. I understand what people might assume, but it’s nothing more than him keeping fit with us.”

Fans have been quick to notice the similarity to last season, when Lampard allowed Jamie Paterson to train with the squad — a move that ultimately led to Paterson earning a short-term deal after impressing during his time at Ryton.
