Newcastle United continue their Carabao Cup title defence on Wednesday night when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to St James’ Park. Eddie Howe’s side ended seven decades of heartbreak earlier this year by lifting the Carabao Cup after defeating Liverpool — their first major domestic success since 1955.
That memorable triumph at Wembley saw Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, and Jamaal Lascelles raise the trophy high in front of jubilant fans. Having avoided a potential slip-up against Bradford City in the previous round, Newcastle now face a much sterner test against a Spurs team eager to add to their own recent Europa League success.
Club captain Guimaraes insists the Magpies are hungry for more silverware:
“It means a lot. We want to keep making history. We went 70 years without a win, but we can make it two in two. It’s a big opportunity, and we don’t want to miss it.”
With last season’s success behind them, Howe’s side are determined to show they belong among England’s elite by consistently challenging for trophies. Tottenham, who last lifted this cup in 2008, travel north confident they can halt Newcastle’s momentum in what promises to be an intense clash under the lights.
