Brendan Rodgers Expected to Respond Following Dermot Desmond’s Criticism, Journalist Reveals
Celtic’s majority shareholder Dermot Desmond’s public criticism of Brendan Rodgers in an official club statement is expected to prompt a response from the recently departed manager, according to BBC journalist Sami Mokbel.
Just days after Rodgers’ exit from the Parkhead dugout, tensions remain high. The Hoops, who fell eight points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts following back-to-back domestic defeats, have entered a new chapter with interim boss Martin O’Neill set to lead them against Falkirk on Wednesday night.
Rodgers Preparing Statement After Celtic’s Comments
Rodgers resigned as Celtic manager on Monday, prompting Desmond to issue a scathing club statement accusing the Northern Irishman of being “divisive, misleading and self-serving.” The criticism followed Rodgers’ public complaints about Celtic’s transfer strategy and internal operations.
Speaking on the Football Daily podcast, BBC journalist Mokbel reported that the former Liverpool and Leicester City boss is likely to respond soon, after consulting with the League Managers Association (LMA).
“I can see Brendan Rodgers, potentially through the LMA, making a response and issuing his own statement,” Mokbel said on Tuesday evening. “This story will continue to develop. As of now, I understand that nothing will be released tonight, but there are definite moves being made toward Rodgers having his say.”
Rodgers, who returned to Celtic in 2023 as Ange Postecoglou’s successor following the Australian’s move to Tottenham Hotspur, enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at the club — securing four Scottish Premiership titles, four League Cups, and three Scottish Cups across his two tenures.
