Coventry boss Frank Lampard gave his verdict over their match defeat 3-2 against Wrexham

Frank Lampard admits Coventry ‘weren’t good enough’ after shock defeat to Wrexham

Coventry City manager Frank Lampard conceded his side fell short of their usual standards after suffering a surprise 3-2 defeat to Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground, ending their unbeaten run in the Championship.

A Kieffer Moore hat-trick sealed a dramatic comeback for the hosts, who overturned an early lead from Ephron Mason-Clark to hand Lampard’s league leaders their first loss of the season. The Welsh international, signed from Sheffield United for £2 million in the summer, struck three times in the second half — taking his season tally to nine — before Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s late goal gave the Sky Blues brief hope.

Despite arriving as firm favourites after six consecutive league wins, Lampard admitted he sensed trouble brewing.

“I could feel it coming, even when we were ahead,” said the Coventry boss. “The atmosphere was incredible, and Wrexham’s style caused us problems. We weren’t good enough tonight, and this league punishes that.”

He continued:

“This team has been extraordinary for 12 games. But today, we were ordinary — our levels dropped. It’s been a tough week losing players from the back four, and consistency at the back has been one of our strengths. I’m not blaming individuals, but as a group, we just weren’t at it.”

The defeat leaves Coventry three points clear at the top of the Championship, having played one game more than Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile, Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson hailed the win as a statement for his team, who now sit 11th after back-to-back home victories.

“It’s a statement performance for ourselves,” Parkinson said. “We’ve been growing in belief, and tonight we showed real quality against an excellent side. We don’t just come to stop teams — we play our football, and some of what we produced tonight was top class.”
