Youssef Chermiti faces strong criticism as Everton’s £8m transfer decision questioned

Everton pocketed £8 million from Youssef Chermiti’s summer move to Rangers, and it’s beginning to look like shrewd business.

The Portuguese striker, who failed to score in 25 appearances during his two years at Goodison Park, has struggled to make an impact at Ibrox. Despite recently netting his first goal for Rangers, Chermiti missed a crucial chance in the Old Firm defeat to Celtic, further fuelling scrutiny over the club’s decision to sign him.

Former Rangers striker and sporting director Gordon Smith has now hit out at the deal, telling the Daily Record it was “out of order.” Smith questioned why the club sanctioned a big-money move for a player with such a limited scoring record, claiming he “wouldn’t have signed Chermiti for free, never mind for £10 million.”

Smith argued that Chermiti’s lack of experience and poor goal return should have ruled him out of contention altogether, adding: “He might come good eventually, but at that level, the valuation was completely unjustified.”

For Everton, however, the sale looks like a rare transfer win — cashing in on a player who had yet to prove himself at senior level.
