Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland has broken his silence on last weekend’s controversial clash with Celtic defender Auston Trusty during the Premier Sports Cup semi-final at Hampden.
Trusty caught Butland in the face with a late challenge — one that referee Nick Walsh deemed worthy of only a yellow card.
Nearly a week later, Butland reflected on the incident, saying:
“There have been plenty of opinions on it. At the time, I thought it was late. As a goalkeeper, when you go in bravely to intercept the ball, you expect a certain level of protection. Watching it back, it was even later than I first realised. It’s a tough one to accept — especially if that’s the standard moving forward.”
The Rangers No.1 revealed he approached Walsh at half-time seeking clarity, adding:
“I just wanted calm communication between the officials to make sure they came to the right decision. There was definitely some disappointment among our staff that day.”
