FA Confirms England Squad Changes Following Newcastle Injuries
England have updated their squad ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania after Newcastle United duo Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope were forced to withdraw due to injury. Gordon suffered a hip injury during Newcastle’s 2-0 Champions League win over Athletic Club, while Pope was sidelined with a concussion.
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe confirmed the injuries following their Premier League defeat to Brentford, noting that Pope would undergo a 12-day concussion protocol. With Burn suspended, Dan Burn is now Newcastle’s sole representative in the England squad.
Pope, whose last England appearance was in September 2022 against Germany, has been replaced by Trafford. Newcastle previously attempted to sign Trafford from Burnley as a long-term option but ultimately acquired Aaron Ramsdale from Manchester City.
All three Newcastle players have faced scrutiny this season amid inconsistent club form. Burn has come under criticism after moving to left-back and receiving a red card against Brentford, though he has also scored in the Champions League. Gordon has shone in Europe with four goals and an assist but has yet to make an impact in the Premier League since January. Pope’s recall to England followed mixed club performances, including conceding three goals at West Ham and failing to deal with a crucial long throw-in against Brentford.
