Big update from Fabrizio Romano in his latest GIVEMESPORT newsletter — Celtic have reportedly been handed the chance to appoint Wilfried Nancy as their new manager. 🍀 According to Romano, the Columbus Crew boss has been “pushed in Celtic’s direction” after internal discussions involving some key figures at Parkhead. It seems like Nancy has now become one of the main names on the club’s shortlist as the search for Brendan Rodgers’ permanent replacement continues.
Right now, Martin O’Neill is still holding things together on an interim basis following Rodgers’ sudden resignation less than a day after the defeat to Hearts last month. The Celtic board, though, are taking their time to get this next appointment right. Romano notes that while Nancy is seen as a genuine option and has even been offered to the club, the people in charge are not rushing into any quick decisions. Instead, they’re carefully weighing up their choices and continuing conversations to figure out if Nancy is the right man to take the job long term.
GIVEMESPORT sources recently revealed that Nancy is considered a more realistic target than Bodo/Glimt head coach Kjetil Knutsen, although the Norwegian manager is still being looked at. What makes Nancy’s situation even more interesting is the timing — his Columbus Crew side were just eliminated from the MLS Cup play-offs by FC Cincinnati last weekend, which means he’s now available and open for talks.
At 48 years old, Nancy has made quite the name for himself in Major League Soccer with his tactical awareness and attacking philosophy, leading the Crew to success and earning praise for his development of young players. Now, with Celtic preparing for their next Scottish Premiership clash against St Mirren on November 22, the French-born manager has emerged as one of the strongest candidates to take over at Parkhead.
Romano summed it up simply: “He has been offered to Celtic as an option, but the internal discussions at the club are still ongoing.”
It sounds like the door is open for Nancy — the question now is whether the Celtic hierarchy decide to walk through it. 👀🍀
