Football pundit Chris Sutton outlines the one way Rangers can win the league this season

Chris Sutton believes Rangers still have a realistic chance of overtaking Hearts and winning the William Hill Premiership under Danny Rohl.

It’s surprising to hear the former Celtic forward speak positively about Rangers, given his usual digs at the club due to his Parkhead ties.

Rohl’s side secured their third consecutive league victory on 9 November with a 3–0 win over Dundee at Dens Park, cutting Hearts’ lead to 12 points—while also holding a game in hand.

Rangers must defeat Hearts and Celtic in January

According to Sutton, the team that comes out strongest from the January transfer window “arms race” will go on to claim the Premiership title. While Andrew Cavenagh may hesitate to give Kevin Thelwell more funds in January, Sutton believes Rohl must push for reinforcements, especially with striker depth remaining a concern.

Sutton also praised Rohl’s tactical flexibility since replacing Russell Martin, but insists he needs better quality in certain areas.

Speaking on the Record Celtic Podcast on 11 November, Sutton said:

“I’m not sure what Rohl is thinking regarding the centre-forward position—he rotates there constantly—so it’ll be interesting to see how many players he brings in.”

Danny Rohl likely to push for one permanent deal

Nasser Djiga’s loan from Wolves has not worked out, and Rangers may look to terminate the deal earlier than planned.

The club also brought in Max Aarons, Emmanuel Fernandez, and Jayden Meghoma during the summer to strengthen the defence, but many of Thelwell’s signings have underperformed.

Derek Cornelius has arguably been one of the few successes, and Rohl is expected to attempt to make his loan permanent, as a purchase option is included in the agreement.

Defensive upgrades are likely to be a key focus for Rangers, and preparing for the potential departures of Tavernier, Aarons, Djiga, and Meghoma may become a major priority when the January window opens.
