No one appreciates the burden currently placed on Youssef Chermiti quite like Duncan Ferguson — or the risk of being dismissed as a failed Rangers signing. Yet the former Ibrox striker still believes the young forward can turn things around despite a difficult start following his £8 million move from Everton.
Chermiti has scored only once for Rangers, and Ferguson knows exactly how tough that can be. He experienced similar struggles at the same age, hitting just two goals in 14 appearances after joining the club in 1993. He says the scale of the transition cannot be underestimated and stresses that a 21-year-old needs time to settle.
Ferguson insists Chermiti has the physical and technical qualities to thrive, but lacks the confidence and luck every striker depends on. He argues the fee must be pushed aside, and that if the forward relaxes, gets a run of games and enjoys the backing of Danny Röhl — who already trusts him enough to start in big matches — opinions can shift quickly.
But patience is limited at a club like Rangers. His missed opportunities against Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final added to concerns, and with five goals and three assists in 57 senior outings, fans are questioning the club’s investment. Even so, Ferguson refuses to write him off, insisting goals can still transform his trajectory.
