Celtic and Ireland supporters send a clear message about Liam Scales after the win over Hungary

It has been a remarkable week for Liam Scales and the Republic of Ireland.

On Sunday, Scales played a major part in one of the most memorable moments in Ireland’s long footballing story, as Heimir Hallgrímsson’s men kept their 2026 World Cup chances alive with a dramatic win.

Troy Parrott’s hat-trick sealed a must-win victory over Hungary, but it was the Celtic defender’s vital header that set up the unforgettable 96th-minute winner.

That match-winning assist capped a brilliant international break for Scales. He also created a goal for Parrott in Ireland’s 2-0 win over ten-man Portugal last Thursday, further boosting his reputation among both Celtic and Ireland fans.

Supporters from both sides were quick to shower the 27-year-old with praise online.

@MaedaMealOfThat posted: “Liam Scales deserves a statue for that, absolutely generational.”

@mfitz_39 sent a message to critics: “Convinced the people who hammer Liam Scales either don’t know anything about football or don’t watch him.”
@hctelfih admitted he’d changed his tune: “Didn’t even realise it was Liam Scales who knocked it on for Parrott at the end — I take back everything I’ve ever said about the guy.”

And @Seanofthedead79 added: “Don’t forget Liam Scales — he has been immense the last two games.”
