FC Twente’s 32-year-old defender Robin Pröpper has revealed how he was forced out by Rangers F.C., despite wanting to stay

FC Twente defender Robin Pröpper has made it clear he never pushed for an exit from Rangers, saying he was open to staying at Ibrox.
Speaking on FC Twente’s “Since 1965” podcast, Pröpper reflected on his brief spell in Scotland and explained why he ultimately decided to return to Enschede.

Pröpper, who previously played 95 league matches for Twente between 2021 and 2024, left for Rangers in August 2024. Although he had been an important figure in his first spell with Twente, he was unable to secure the same influence in Glasgow. Even so, he insists he did not arrive at the summer window determined to leave. Instead, he initially explored the possibility of extending his stay.

However, Rangers made it clear that his role in the squad was changing, and when Twente showed strong interest in bringing him back, the decision became easier.

“It was stay at Rangers or return to FC Twente,” Pröpper said. “I first checked if it was possible to remain at Rangers, because it wasn’t like I wanted to leave. Not at all. But when my role shifted and Twente were really eager to have me again, I thought: why not? I’d had such a great period there before.

“I know it’s always tough to recreate or surpass a previous spell, but I was willing to give everything to make it work. I have a good feeling about the club, and they feel the same about me.”

Pröpper enjoyed a strong start under former Rangers boss Philippe Clement, but once Clement departed, his playing time dwindled. Under Russell Martin, a consistent starting position was no longer available, prompting his return to the Netherlands.
