A Spanish club is reportedly moving closer to securing the signature of a Newcastle United player, with plans in motion for the transfer to be completed in January

The 19-year-old winger, who joined Newcastle United as a free agent in the summer after running down his contract with Málaga, has endured a difficult start to life away from Spain. Although many expected him to head out on loan to a Spanish side to continue his development, Newcastle instead sent him to Belgian outfit KVC Westerlo for the season — a decision that was questioned at the time and has since proved problematic.

Cordero has barely featured in Belgium, making the loan spell a clear failure. With his lack of playing time becoming a major concern, Newcastle are almost certain to terminate the deal in January. And now, a more suitable next destination appears to be taking shape.

While early reports in Spain didn’t reveal which club wanted him, Cadena SER have now identified Deportivo La Coruña as the team closing in on his services. The La Liga 2 leaders are pushing for promotion to the top flight and want Cordero to join them on loan in January to strengthen their attacking options. Deportivo currently sit first on goal difference, though only a single point separates the top four, setting up an intense promotion race.

Cordero’s arrival is expected to bolster their squad for what promises to be a tightly contested battle for a return to La Liga.
