£70m-rated player, viewed as superior to Anderson, is reportedly open to signing with Newcastle United

Newcastle United Eye Midfield Reinforcements: Anderson and McTominay in Focus

First and foremost, Newcastle United face no immediate financial concerns or issues with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Technical director Ross Wilson has now settled into his role at St. James’ Park, building a strong working relationship with Eddie Howe as they look to strengthen key areas of the squad.

Despite a shaky start to the season following summer upheaval, the Magpies are beginning to show promise in their bid to establish themselves as Champions League contenders and a multi-trophy-winning side.

Defensive positions are under review, but with Joelinton’s form inconsistent, Howe is prioritizing the search for a new midfielder. The burning question: will it be Elliot Anderson?

Newcastle Targeting Elite Talent

Howe expressed his desire to bring Anderson back in October. The 23-year-old, sold to Nottingham Forest in 2024, has since developed into a top-class midfielder.

The sale, forced by Premier League PSR regulations, was a disappointment for Newcastle. Now, the club hopes to bring him home, though competition is fierce from Manchester City and Manchester United, and Nottingham Forest value Anderson at over £100m.

Anderson’s rise has seen him compare favorably to Sandro Tonali in Newcastle’s midfield, with the Italian widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s elite players.

Scott McTominay: A Strong Alternative

If Newcastle fail in their pursuit of Anderson, Scott McTominay could be a viable alternative. According to Chronicle Live, the 28-year-old is unsettled at Napoli and considering a return to the Premier League.

Valued at £70m, he is likely to attract multiple suitors, but sources indicate he would be open to joining Tyneside and playing under Howe.

McTominay’s rise in Italy has been remarkable. Once a middling prospect at Manchester United, he has become a hero at Napoli and for Scotland, ranking 18th in the 2025 Ballon d’Or and being described by content creator Adam Joseph as a “true superstar of European and world football.” Former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær has praised him as a “physical monster,” highlighting his blend of athleticism, defensive strength, and offensive capability.

Howe could utilize McTominay ahead of Bruno Guimarães and Tonali, combining his tenacity, eye for goal, and high duel success rate with their elegant, combative style. This makes him an exciting alternative if Anderson proves unattainable.
