Celtic’s pursuit of Wilfried Nancy has had its share of complications, but the situation now appears settled.
Martin O’Neill confirmed during his press conference that he will oversee his final match on Wednesday when Celtic host Dundee at Parkhead.
That clears the way for Nancy to officially begin his tenure against Hearts on Sunday — a tough introduction for the incoming boss.
Nancy had originally been expected to arrive earlier, but O’Neill’s unexpected decision to stay on for the Dundee match raised questions about the timing. Any uncertainty, however, looks to have been nothing more than a minor delay.
For the moment, attention is on O’Neill himself. The club legend returned when Celtic needed stability and has successfully restored belief and consistency within the squad.
His farewell on Wednesday is likely to be emotional. Ahead of the Dundee game, O’Neill confirmed the timeline before the question was even completed.
“That was always the remit,” he said. “Whether it was two weeks or five or six, that was always the plan. I’ve no complaints.”
The only step left is the club’s formal announcement — though communication mishaps aren’t unusual for Celtic.
As O’Neill prepares for his send-off, he’ll be aiming for one last win before Nancy begins what will be a demanding opening week.
“You’ll be relieved to know this is definitely it for tomorrow evening,” O’Neill added. “I’ve been assured by the board. The new manager will take over — I’m not sure about the process — but this is definitely my final game.”
