Celtic’s search for a new manager is finally reaching its conclusion after a period of uncertainty and changing circumstances.
Martin O’Neill has confirmed that Wednesday’s match against Dundee will be his last in the dugout, following assurances from the club’s hierarchy. His departure clears the path for Wilfried Nancy to take over, with the expectation that he will be in charge for Sunday’s fixture against Hearts.
Before the managerial handover, attention will turn to O’Neill’s final outing at Celtic Park. His short-term spell has been impressive, guiding the club to six wins from seven matches and restoring a sense of momentum.
At his pre-match press conference, Arne Engels was asked about the ongoing managerial situation and gave a candid response. The midfielder, who will be looking to maintain his recent form against Dundee, was questioned on whether the squad had received any updates on Nancy’s arrival.
Engels replied:
“No, not yet. We haven’t been told anything. That’s why I said I’m not even sure if this will be Martin’s last game.
We know a new manager is coming, but who it will officially be, I honestly don’t know.”
Engels is one of several players to have rediscovered their best form under O’Neill. The midfield trio of Engels, Reo Hatate, and Callum McGregor—so effective under Brendan Rodgers in Europe last season—has been reunited to great effect.
He admitted that, naturally, players will always discuss potential managerial candidates when changes are looming:
“It’s like during the transfer window—names come up and you talk about a few of them. Not all, but some. And all the conversations about managers have been positive.”
Engels is far from the only player who has benefited from O’Neill’s guidance.
Auston Trusty, who was dropped for Dane Murray in Rodgers’ final match against Hearts, has started every game since O’Neill’s arrival and done enough to earn a recall to the United States national team.
Johnny Kenny has also thrived, scoring four goals in five matches, while Callum Osmand rewarded O’Neill’s trust by coming off the bench against Rangers to net his first senior goal.
In recent weeks, winger Yang Hyun-Jun has also returned to prominence, contributing strongly after spending much of the summer close to leaving the club.
Engels believes the squad is well positioned for the incoming change:
“We’re in a good place now, and I think the timing is right for a new manager to come in. You’ve got Hearts at the weekend, and then several important games after that.”
