Rangers F.C. player Emmanuel Fernandez faces heavy criticism for his poor performance in the draw against Dundee United

Rangers star Emmanuel Fernandez labelled ‘absolutely dreadful’ after Dundee United draw

Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez came under heavy criticism following his performance in the club’s 2-2 draw against Dundee United on Wednesday night.

Danny Rohl’s side travelled to Tannadice Park aiming to continue their strong run of form and climb the league table but fell behind early.

Zach Sapsford put the home side ahead after just 11 minutes. Jayden Meghoma levelled with a stunning strike 12 minutes later, marking his first goal for Rangers, before Amar Fatah scored a sensational solo effort in the second half. Nadim Bajrami rescued a point for Rangers with a 98th-minute penalty.

Defensive struggles have plagued Rangers all season. With Derek Cornelius and John Souttar sidelined by injury, Rohl was forced to rely on a makeshift defensive pairing — a decision that proved costly.

Fernandez struggles for Rangers
Fernandez, who joined Rangers from Peterborough during the summer as part of Russell Martin’s rebuild, has struggled for game time this season.

However, injuries in the squad have seen him start the last four games.

The 24-year-old was at fault for the opening goal, as Sapsford easily turned him on the halfway line before racing into the penalty area and lifting the ball over goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The error highlighted both his inexperience at the top level and certain physical limitations despite his imposing size.

Rangers salvage draw late
Bajrami’s penalty in stoppage time ensured Rangers salvaged a point, boosting morale and giving Rohl something to work with ahead of upcoming fixtures.

Still, Fernandez’s performance raised questions about his readiness for consistent top-level play. Fans and pundits alike have criticised him, suggesting Rohl may need to rethink his defensive options.

With Souttar and Cornelius unavailable, potential adjustments could include shifting James Tavernier into central defence and deploying Max Aarons and Meghoma at full-back.

Regardless of the formation, Fernandez will need to improve significantly or risk losing his place in the starting lineup.
